“Your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties.” -Helen Keller

The year 2020 has taught me many things. By many I mean many, but in this essay I will summarize through the things that I learnt in 2020.

The year began on a high note, it was close to January 10 and we in 8th std were soon going for a trip from school. Everyone was really excited as this would be our second trip and trips from school with our friends are really fun. In this trip we went around for trekking, were staying at an hotel and did much more such as visit factories and went to a museum. The bus rides were extremely fun to sit in with friends and play games. This trip taught me not only educational things but also things that I would go on cherish for the rest of my school years.

Going back to February 2020 now, our exams ended by the end of February and our 9th grade started as expected. Before we knew it, by March the Corona Virus started to spread more and more, lock downs were initiated in some countries but most people including me shrugged and thought that this lock down would last for about 2 weeks. Oh boy were things going to go downhill from there.

April 2020, our first lessons of online school started, we were extremely confused and so were the teachers. There was no order in the classes. People were getting kicked and muted here and there. The teachers did not know much hence, they could not do anything as they did not know what action to take. Studies were still on for full 8 school hours and there were normal periods, breaks, etc.

May 2020, our summer vacations started, before these vacations we were a bit acquainted to the online classes going on and there was a bit more order there.

It was in this month that I started to go to the club near my house, started swimming again and had fun. This was also the month where I started to play table tennis at my home. We had the tennis net that we bought, our dining table and 2 table tennis rackets and 4 balls. I started playing table tennis from here and went on.

May 21st 2020, our school reopened before our vacations were supposed to end because they already had a bit delay due to the lock down and confusion in March.

In this month not only the students but also the teachers were more systematic with studies although the system was not entirely perfect. Tests were being conducted and more periods were added.

June 6th 2020, in this month I got my new laptop for online classes and for studying computers. It was in this month that our 3rd subject also known as electives took place. We were very keen on learning as we had waited a long time for this. In this month I learnt the basics of the programming language “Java” and executed my programs on a java executing app called “Blue”.

September 2020 – it was in this month that we started taking our exams. This month taught us how to do our exams which were for 50 marks and mock tests for 20 marks were also included in this. This method taught us how to give exams online without a hassle from home and solved our problems.

November 2020 – the school year was going on like previously and we continued to study. It was in this month that I started practicing beat boxing that I had learnt in 2018 once again. It was pretty fun and I did make some improvements. I kept practicing beat boxing along with attending online school.

December 2020 – online classes were really taking a toll on me. I was stressed about upcoming exams in February 2021 but also very happy that this atrocious year was about to end. I really wanted the school to re-open but now new cases of Corona Virus started to appear in foreign countries such as United Kingdoms and Africa. This month taught me how to be patient and realize that all obstacles cannot be overcome easily but there is NO obstacle that CANNOT be overcome no matter how hard it is to overcome it.

January 2021- I am currently writing this on January 8, 2021 and reflecting on all that has happened in the previous year and how my awareness about the Virus and ways of living has changed. The year even though has its bad sides it also has its good sides such as everyone now understands the importance of sanitizing themselves which is necessary.

I would like to conclude with this quote by Alfred Lord Tennyson.

“Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come, whispering, it will be happier.”

I wish you all a very happy new year and hope that 2021 goes better than 2020.
