The traditional folk music of India is one of the most important cultural aspects of our country. I consider the fact that every different region in India possesses it’s very own style of music a boon to traditions and a lesson to modern civilization. In the lush green mountainous areas of the Kashmir valley, all weary, fatigued travellers are welcomed by rejuvenating melodies of rhythmic Kashmiri music. The principal instruments used are the harmonium, the rubab, the sarangi or the nout. It is said that the traditional music from the Jammu areas is similar to those from other northern areas. The Santoor is considered a favourite traditional instrument in these areas. Kashmiri and Dogri(music from Jammu ) folk songs and musical pieces are known to be calming and for enabling the listener to think clearly and for allowing a flow of thoughts. . There are also many notable Santoor players from the states of Jammu and Kashmir including Shivkumar Sharma and Bhajan Sopori from Jammu and Kashmir respectively. It is said that music has the power to inspire, the power to help you to forget about the past and stop worrying about the future.. The ability to do this is more than one could ever, ever hope for. Something that enables one to put up a valiant effort; to make a person refuse to give up; is something very, very special. It is scientifically proven that music of any kind increases one’s capabilities in every field. Folk music does just that. If at any time in your life , you feel like you need a break from the hectic city life , the hilly states of Jammu and Kashmir would be more than happy to welcome you into the re-energizing embrace of comforting Kashmiri music.
